Short statement of intentions which are already outlined in etude IV documentation:

Quartz Conductor is animation tool for a gallery or club installation. The viewer in a gallery or “Visual Jockey” in club can conduct a live animation, for example to music. This project is created in Quartz Composer with Wii controller, mouse, keyboard, video files, live camera and audio input.
I use the Wii controller as a tool of direct expression. I can express movement through visual information. This conducting tool is a real time tool and is only possible through new real time programs such as Quartz composer. Key and centre of the animation is the movement of the hand. Technology, in this case quartz composer and wii, allow me to transform this movement into a live animation. I see this animation as an abstract painting of movement. A virtual abstract painting of my movement which takes place in this three dimensional reality. But this abstract painting is concerned with movement of the past as a traditional painting would be, this painting is only concerned with the now and will not remember any happening. This device has no memory or conscious of the past. Neither does it calculate future events. This tool processes only the present.

Documentation:
I installed Wii to quartz program and attached my Wii controller.
I started creating particle systems in Quartz Composer. I really like the look of them - but I didn't know how they work. But I was soon able to manipulate and arrange them for my needs.
I also wanted to have different backgrounds but again didn’t know in the beginning how to create them.
Blog Image

1) x rotation and z rotation control x and y position of particle system
in between is a math tool to divide the rotation information by 90 (original information is -180 to 180 now -2 to 2)
Blog Image

2) I created an identical particle system which (except colour) which can be switched on with the keyboard (key 1)
(the image is a simple
circle - blending ADD - I played around with the functions till they were visually pleasing)

Blog ImageBlog Image
3/4) – that’s the way it looks

Blog Image
5) I created two similar particle system (smaller different colour) and connected them with x and z rotation - but used a math tool to change the initial position
- also these particle system are not active - I connected the X position with max size/size delta so when I use the x position on the controller - the
extra particle system turn on and I can control the size .....
..but I can also switch them of with the x position (as soon as I am in the minus area) they move the same way as the main particle system.
Blog Image
6) image of it

Blog Image
7) I created a third one small p.s. and change the position to the top ( it reacts the same way as the others but can be switched on and of with a key (2)
Blog Image
8- (I changed the delta size information - that's why it is smaller)

Blog Image
9) the switch I used was given to me by Ian and I already used it successfully for my other video to wii etude

Blog Image

10) I copied the three small particle systems , changed the colour and enabled them through another key (3) and a switch
Blog Image
11) all together. moving wii fast .
Blog Image
12) rotating the prospective through the mouse. ( as everything is inside a trackball)
- it works already in a very satisfying way
but I think I have to change the scale /// maybe with the z position on the wii
Blog Image
13) I created a new background animation
a particle system with a halo as image.
Blog Image
14) - key (q) enables the background
- key (w) activates a counter - this goes to a math patch which multiples by 3 and
Blog Image
15) hits the maximum size which creates a huge halo flash - key (e) resets the signal in the counter.
Blog Image
Blog Image

16/17 I created a new background with smoke effect ( the idea is from another project I saw in the internet)
Blog Image
18) more background smoke...
Blog Image

19) created lightning called new stuff
- key d for new trackball
- creating new source images for particle systems drop flame shape egg shape
Blog Image

20) New Trackball with f key – flame shape picture as input
Blog Image
21) new background on key c funky smoke
Blog ImageBlog Image
22/23) new particle system which reacts to audio input. Chages colour through audio (maths and rgb colour transformer) maximum size is also changeable through audio key H
Blog Image
24) Key G triggers audio sensitive particle formed out of a wave like image… when the particle system is small (audio silent) a drop is visible behind the waves)
Blog Image
25)
Key J is a fog patch with a psychedelic patch inside. The image reacts to a Video Input scale is changeable via audio input and the colour changes through audio input/math patch/RGB patch.
Blog ImageBlog Image

26/27) I used Zugakusaku’s flag patch and manipulated it for Key K. the little squares is a video input. The flag movies the way Zugakusaku programmed it. Audio input controls the colour and width of the patch. The whole patch is inside a trackball so that I can rotate around the flag.
Blog ImageBlog Image

28/29) Key L – another audio sensitive particle system. The minimum size is sensitive by audio impulse and so is the maximum size. Colour changes through audio as well. The input image is a round star. I think this patch is particularly good for picking up the bass in music.
Blog ImageBlog Image
30/31) Key ; - audio sensitive particle systems with auto rotation – friction sensitivity, input image on particle system I –

Blog Image
a green egg like shape – on particle system two a white star – on particle system III a orange ball. Size/lifetime/colour change via audio input. The inputs are controlled through math patches .(32) particle systems are inside a trackball and I can change there position with the Wii.

Blog ImageBlog Image

33/34) I created a sphere inside a trackball – a videofile is attached to it – size, colour and depth are controlled by audio signals. The audio is controlled via math patches.

I created over the last two months more than 100 different patches which function in diverse ways in combination with over 20 keyboard keys and the Wii. I will in my selfevaluation point my achievements and what I want to do with this project in the future.

Command list:

s - start basic particle in the middle
- rotation move basic particle
cross right/left - switch side particle on and off/extend
cross up/down - z position of middle particle
d trackball slow red drop shape
f trackball faster flame shape
g trackball sound big ugly
h trackball sound smooth with functions for 4 5 6 make bigger
j – video audio fog patch
k – video flag
l – audio particle system for bass
; - audio sensitive particle systems (3 systems different shapes)
‘ – is a sphere with a video file attached reacts to audio as well….
q- start - halo (rotate halo through x/z rotation)
w- extreme halo
r- stop extreme halo
in combination of particle S
1- change colour of middle particle
2- switch top particle on (reacts like side particles)
3- change colour of top and side particle
in combination of particle H
4- change colour of middle particle
5- switch top particle on (reacts like side particles)
6- change colour of top and side particle
wii button A - psycho rings
wii button B - yellow fire
mouse click and move changes middle/top/side particles
z - background with smoke
x – different smoke

Self-evaluation – “Quartz Conductor”

Throughout the process of creating my “Quartz Conductor” device I felt that I was producing a device for somebody else. I believed - and still do- that “Quartz Conductor” is a tool especially for VJ’s at clubs or raves. The visuals are very “techno”. This is not my kind of music but the visuals I created suit electronic music much better than Jazz or Blues. When I started creating the tool my knowledge of Quartz Composer was still very limited. The interface and object controls in Quartz Composer were frustrating at the beginning of the process. As soon as I understood the concept however, it started to become easier. These moments somehow encouraged me to continue working on the tool. The playful development enabled me to create even pre-visualised ideas after a while.
I used Video files, live video input, live audio input, photos and graphics to create my patches. I was inspired by Quartz Composer artists like Zugakousaku for some of my patches. Others were entirely my own idea and composition. The most important thing in the development of this device was concentrating on its purpose. I had a lot of different ideas for good-looking patches but most of them would not fit in a club environment or would not fit with the previous patches. The most difficult device to work with was the live video input. It was difficult to control the input with particle systems or other 3D render patches. But as all my problems I was able to solve them through trying and trying differently. If I had known already from the beginning of the semester that this was going to be my final project I could have experimented in the studies with different things. I really wanted to include a midi device and more live cameras but time and money did not allow me to take this step. If I had to give advice to someone who wants to do something similar to me I would say: write down the locations within Quartz Composer and name all the patches in a logical way. Half way through the process I stopped working on the project for two weeks and when I returned to it I did not know what was what. This is also advice I would give myself: better structure!

Conclusion:
“Quartz Conductor” is not only a fun tool but a device that works with new technology and combines the physical and virtual world. A 3dhybrid! I think I fulfilled the requirements of the assignment by creating an original tool which combines the two worlds. It also has artistic as well as commercial values. I want to work on it in the future and try to develop a perfectly working tool!

A short statement of intentions
What I am trying to achieve with this etude is to gain quartz knowledge for my final project.
I want to experiment more with movement and wii and learn how to control the wiitoquartz batch.
My quartz knowledge is still very limited so this will be a very good exercise as I would like to work more with Quartz Composer.

Documentation of Technical and Artistic Process

1) I bought the wii and connected it
2) tested it with Ian's teapot program
- then I got stuck ...didn't know how to use the quartz file!! my problem was i used the original source file of Hiroaki 'Darwiin-Remote' and I just didn't get it.... but than I thought - of course it doesnt work in quartz that s what the QCWii programm is for .... but still didnt get it.....but I was on the right way..... but it took me a while to work with Ians file - which allready connected the bluettoth information with a 3D object.... anyway I got it and started to experiment..
3/4) apply new texture
5) change background
6) I created a new object and moved it together with the teapot (different values)
7) created a 3D sphere
what I wanted to do know is manipulate the rotation information into a position information.........
8) I tried interpolation ... but figured out that there are different values in rotation and position -180 to 180 in rotation and -2 to 2 in position
SO how to solve this mathematical problem.....??
9) I used Java script which works to one extend - I used a fixed value like -90 from the X rotation changed it to -1 and assigned it to the x position in my 3D sphere... the sphere jumps around when it reaches the exact value of -90 .....
I thought good that's something but .... I wont write 10.000 if statements to make it work so ...
10) I tryed to limit the information with range - which works somehow to but it doesn't give a full movement.....
11) so I used maths... which I already tried in the beginning but dropped because it didnt work at all.... I divided the information by 90 and e voila I got position and rotation from the same information.... it is not smooth enough yet and I have to change the values but it is a good start...... and took me only .......toooooo long.
12/13) OK next step - more spheres which react the same way. - I simple multipl. the sphere but changed the initial x position through a maths batch (add or subtract a certain value.)
- this works fine -

Still problem: movement of the spheres and wii are not in the same direction.... - positions should be plus and the other way around - if I turn wii tho the left my sphere rolls to the right....
couldn't find a mathematical solution yet - something like invert number or maybe java - if value is minus add double amount if value plus subtract double amount.. hmmmm don't know...
more experimenting...... no internet access at the moment!! that really sucks when trying to do something like this.......

How successful is the etude?
I started this etude/study because I thought I am going to do something similar as final project. But the I realised that I rather continue to work on etude IV. But I only started etude IV because of experimenting with wii and quartz. So this etude is somehow the first step to my final project but I don't want to experiment in this direction any further for the moment. I am satisfied with what I did and it also works but to extend this basic batch I would need to get into serious maths. I am happy that I don't have to do this for the moment. So etude went well but could always be better!!

Quartz Conductor

A short statement of intentions

this is going to be the base for my final project
I want to create a tool with which I can conduct a live animation
( conduct visuals to a song)
main external tools are the wii, mouse and keyboard in the final project I will extend this with middi tools and maybe camera or sound)
I start with particle systems. I really like the look of them - but I don't know how they work so that is target number one.
I also want to have different backgrounds..... maybe fire or sky.
again I have no idea how to do this but I am sure the internet will be a helping hand.

Conceptualisation of the work
The wii offers a great way of direct expression. I can express movement through visual information. This conducting tool is a real time tool and is only possible through new real time programs such as Quartz composer. Key and centre of the etude/idea is the movement of the hand. Technology, in this case quartz composer and wii, allow me to transform this movement into a live animation. I see this animation as an abstract painting of movement. But this abstract painting is concerned with movement of the past as a traditional painting would be, this painting is only concerned with the now and will not remember any happening. This device has no memory or conscious of the past. Neither does it calculate future events. This tool processes only the present.

I used wii to quartz program as base.

- they move the same way as the main particle system
6) image of it
7) I created a third one small p.s. and change the position to the top ( it reacts the same way as the others but can be switched on and of with a key (2)

8- (I changed the delta size information - that's why it is smaller)
9) the switch I used was given to me by Ian and I already used it successfully for my other video to wii etude

10) I copied the three small particle systems , changed the colour and enabled them through another key (3) and a switch

11) all together.... moving wii fast .
12) rotating the prospective through the mouse. ( as everything is inside a trackball)

- it works already in a very satisfying way
but I think I have to change the scale /// maybe with the z position on the wii

13) I created a new background animation

(14) - key (q) enables the background
- key (w) activates a counter - this goes to a math patch which multiples by 3 and ( 15)hits the maximum size ..........which creates a huge halo flash
- key (e) resets the signal in the counter.

16/17 I created a new background with smoke effect ( the idea is from another project I saw in thte internet)

17/18) more background smoke...

Command list:
s - start basic particle in the middle
- rotation move basic particle
cross right/left - switch side particle on and off/extand
cross up/down - z position of middle particle

q- start - halo (rotate halo through x/z rotation)
w- extreme halo
r- stop extreme halo

1- change colour of middle particle
2- switch top particle on (reacts like side particles)
3- change colour of top and side particle

wii button A - psychodelic rings
wii button B - yellow fire

mouse click and move changes middle/top/side particles

a - background with smoke

extantion:
During the process of working on this batch I also had the idea of attaching the wii to the body. Dance would be directly transformed to visual information. Real time animation through body. I love this idea. But I think this would only work if I can use 3 or 4 wii's with quartz composer. Unless I use 3 different computers. I could than project these 3 different animations onto 3 canvases which surround the dancer!! But that is a whole other idea.

How successful is the etude?
after experimenting with different batches I am really happy with the outcome of this study. I am also really excited to continue working on it for the final project.
I believe that this life conducting tool cold be a great gadget for DJ's or performers in the electronic music scene but also interesting in a gallery.
The great thing is that I can extend this tool unlimited ! midi tools, camera, mouse, joystick, keyboards etc....
etude is successful!!

Keyboard Controlled multible videostream through Quartz Composer

Your name

Lukas Birk

Your Pathway Combination

Digital Arts and Photography

The title of your etude

Video Controller

A short statement of intentions

I want to create a multible videostream controlled by a keyboard or bluetooth controller. This etude is connected to my Single Project.
What you initially wanted the piece to be about / for - its conceptionsHow you initially intend to create the etude
I wanted to use the Nintendo Wii controller to direct 9 videos on one screen through the Quartz Composer Application. But during the first steps of creating the batch I realized that a keyboard would work better as my Single project is an installation piece.
I want to place a manipulated keyboard (only a limited amount of keys are accessable) infront of a videowall. Through this keyboard the viewer is able to interact with the different videos that are shown. Change position and scale. It should have the feeling of beeing in a CCTV operating room.
Project explanaition:
THe videos show a room of a mental instituation - in which two inmates are trying to break out through dance. First they are in two seperate rooms but than they dance into one room. (they jump through a wall which will be shown with a simultanios cut on all video stream. The videostream are CCTV camera. 9 in total - attached to the celling of the room. In the end the inmates realize that they cannot break out through dance so they drop on the ground and start to breath heavily. In the end they day and escape through their breath.

Conceptualisation of the work / Reference

CCTV has become a medium of truth. It can even be used as evidence at court. I want to play with this truth. To present a totally staged and even cut film as if it happens now as if it is this new truth! This is the frame of my idea. Dance and especially contemporary dance, is in my mind a brilliant from of expression, which hasn’t been, explored much in installations and is definitely “new” to CCTV art.

CCTV art:

From the Cambridge News Webpage:

(1) BIG Brother-style surveillance cameras could be installed around Cambridge as part of a controversial art project.Artist James Coupe wants to put up the cameras to catch memorable moments from people's everyday lives, and aims to produce feature films from the footage, to be shown at an international film festival. His plan is to place between eight and 12 cameras around the city to capture public activities including greeting kisses, farewell scenes, and meetings.

Banksy CCTV ART

Banksy has been an influence in my approach of street art. His various museum visits (including the Louvre, Tate Modern and museum of contemporary art NY) set a whole new league to art piracy.
Blog Image
resource (2)

This museum piece place the presents of CCTV in a context of preservation. As old oil paintings seam to be a preservation of past time. Will CCTV be preserved as a past way of lifing one day. This is also a strong statement of the current presents of CCTV world wide. (especially in the UK were 35% of all public CCTV cameras are installed)

Abuse of the Public Domain by UK artist Stanza.

(3) This exhibition features large-scale projections of 2 works, which use live real-time data from CCTV cameras cited in two cities, London and New York . Security tracking data is Stanza's chosen medium for these process led artworks.
Images taken from the Stanza exhibition, 'You are my subjects'. YOU ARE MY SUBJECTS uses data from a single fixed cctv camera in NYC, focusing on subjects as they pass below it.

Multiple cameras are accessed randomly in real time to make an urban tapestry. What you see is an evolving, generative artwork. These images are from taken London, and they happen as you see them, in real time. The installation versions of this work can be presented in art galleries using projectors or plasma displays. This online artwork represents many realities that exist in city space. The observed real time surveillance society is re worked into a series of grids. This presents London to a global online audience. The data that you see is protected by the data protection act. Here it is re mixed into what you see, which is this online artwork that look like a filmic experience.
Blog ImageBlog Image

This England: A Green and Pleasant Land 2005. - Live Now.

another CCTV project by Stanza
(4)Sublime paintings in the "northern romantic tradition". These pastoral landscapes and seascapes are real time paintings. Instead of CCTV watching our movement in urban space these cameras point out to the landcape or towards the sea. Typically this subject matter was the focus of the 'Old Masters'.
In 'Sublime: This England' .I create a morphing series of real time paintings that are always changing. Please note this is not a film but a generative experience of the landscape.
EXTRA WORK. Emergent world. Using thousands of camera view live plus thousands of sounds. A perspective of the world in real time.

Describe and depict what the actual concept of the etude is.

Write about:

THe porpuse is to recreate a CCTV ooperation room. Thorugh the process of programing I am going to learn more about Quartz composer and how to feed this application with life informatoin which than reacts to a virtual infornmant. The spectator of the installation will feel closer/more involved in the actual film that is shown on the videowall it will be more belivable that this is actually happen now and that it is a CCTV recording.

Technical Analysis
---------------------------------------------------first attempt
Image 1: creating a background through black image and billboard (replaced it later with clear)
Image 2: importetd differnet movei files and positioned the sprites on the screen
Image 3: in total 9 files and 9 sprites (they represent the CCTV stream/files I will use later on )
Image 4: I copy and pasted all the files/sprites and added a keyboard controll to the pasted sprites (it is enabled until I press (in this case "q" - when pressed it will play the file in full screen mode
Image 5: at first I had a problem with the pasted sprites when they were unabled but than I understood how to put layers in the background
Image 6: changing inspector in sprites for full screen mode
Image 7: a bit of a mass to many files (figured out later how to creat a nice hierachy
Image 8:all 9 files palying at once
----------------------------------------after little chat with Ian and his explanaition of q c
Image 9: I wanted to use uncompressed files instead of quicktime compressed ones so I exported a file with different filters as dv (uncompressed)
Image 10: changing hierachy
Image 11: changing hierachy in root folder
Image 12: using uncompressed files didn't change anything .. even lower framrate and 98% rendering load .. so I went back to my compressed ones.
Image 13: I tryed to work out how to change the position of two sprites when pressing a button through keyboard control.. but it didn't work ... tryed all kinds of tools and controllers but couldn't figer it out....
---------------------------------------wrote Ian an email..
Ian emeiled me promptly some patches and solutions
Image 14: I imported the swop patch and tryed to figure Ians explanation out - which seamed to be written in japanies with roman letter.... but I after all not that difficult ..... I erased the Image Dimensions . didn't need that
Image 15: changed teh java script for the first swop on a X position
Image 16: did the same with to other video on a Y position
Image 17: and finaly created another output to change three positions at once.....
--------------------------------------what else could I ad???

Write about:
THe first and main problem was that I never used Quartz Composer before so I had no idea where to start. I analized a couble of batches which I downloaded from the apple side. And simply played around with the programm. At one point I thought I understood how I can controll the videos. This inlightment came upon me while drinking tea from my new tea lamp!!!

How successful is the etude?
It works perfect. All I need now is a faster mac for the final performance. But as a etude it works perfect.

What is physical computing?

It's an approach to learning how humans communicate through computers that starts by considering how humans express themselves physically.

A lot of beginning computer interface design instruction takes the computer hardware for given -- namely, that there is a keyboard, a screen, perhaps speakers, and a mouse -- and concentrates on teaching the software necessary to design within those boundaries. In physical computing, we take the human body as a given, and attempt to design within the limits of its expression.

This means that we have to learn how a computer converts the changes in energy given off by our bodies, in the form of heat, light, sound, and so forth, into changing electronic signals that it can read interpret. We learn about the sensors that do this, and about very simple computers, called microcontrollers, that read sensors and convert their output into data. Finally, we learn how microcontrollers communicate with other computers.

Physical computing takes a hands-on approach, which means that you spend a lot of time building circuits, soldering, writing programs, building structures to hold sensors and controls, and figuring out how best to make all of these things relate to a person's expression.

First published in 1998, the title refers to the simplistic mental image most of us have of our PCs. The author says our consciousness is our user illusion of ourselves. Drawing on scientific research from psychology and biology to physics and computer science, he makes a compelling case for putting consciousness in perspective.

Essential addition to the literature on consciousness, 18 Nov 1998
Reviewer: A reader
Norretranders does a thorough, thoughtful, and excellent job explicating what may be revolutionary ideas about consciousness. True: he tends to repeat the same thought as many as four times in a row to make sure the reader understands a new concept; but this annoying habit does help convince the reader of a number of unfamiliar ideas that are often the opposite of common sense.Norretranders tends to build his concepts one on top of the other, chapter by chapter, leading to what one expects to be a final tying-up of what consciousness really is, with clues as to how we might modulate our actions using this new information. But he doesn't wind up where he seems to be going. Starting with a theory of how consciousness is a kind of summary of millions of bits of information reduced to a mere handful, he ends up by luxuriating poetically in a warm and fuzzy vision of sublime peace and brotherhood.Along the way to this disappointing conclusion, he splits the function of the brain into two parts, which he calls the "I" and the "me."The "I" is the source we take to be our focus of attention and "will." But through an extensive discussion of the work of (and private letters and conversations with) the pioneer neuroscientist Benjamin Libet, Norretranders argues that the "will" is an illusion (like an icon on a Macintosh computer, it is a "user illusion"). We actually start doing things, he claims, before we "want" to do them. We merely assume that we "wanted" to do what we just did. Norretranders's (and Libet's) inference from this theory is that "free will" can exercise nothing more substantial than veto power.Norretranders's "me," on the other hand, is a kind of glorified noble savage made up of all the input that travels through the brain, the vast majority of which remains unconscious. (It is like the flow of electrons that eventually condense into a computer screen icon.)This division of the brain's functioning into two parts reminds one of the recently fashionable "dichotomania" that divided the brain into "left-brain" and "right-brain" thinking. It turned out (Norretranders recounts) that the brain's structure is far more complicated than such a dichotomy will allow. It may be that Norretranders's "I" and "me" division will turn out to be an equally naive notion; and that the true divisions of the conscious-unconscious brain are more than two, and more complicated than Norretranders makes out.Where do those moments belong that we sense but don't pay attention to, then are able to recall seconds later when we realize their importance? (For example, crossing a street and not "really" hearing an automobile horn until we realize too late that it was honking at us!) Are those preliminary moments "conscious," "unconscious," "preconscious," examples of short-term memory, dreams, or a combination of many elements?Where is the grandeur of consciousness when appreciating great art or beauty? Norretranders would classify such moments (which he calls "sublime") as property of the unconscious "me"; and would relegate moments of "I"-consciousness downward toward the awkward self-conscious fidgets that embarrass a stage actor who forgets his lines. This dichotomy seems backwards and anti-intellectual.Finally, the use of "I" and "me" to label parts of a dichotomy is unfortunate in that those words are parts of speech, one a subject and one an object. Consciousness can't really be divided that way.Despite these arguments, the book remains an essential one for anyone who's interested in the subject of consciousness; certainly as important as Pinker's or Dennett's recent works.

MIKRO MAN off road
Blog Imagethats the way they sell it ( from http://www.singulier.com/boutique_us)

These little scenes are futuristic reconstitution of the human condition in the 21st century. They are pre-cut in a stainless steel leaf only 150 micron thick and are little mirrors full of ideas from our lives. To be contemplated.

Each Mikro-Man is supplied flat and is simply waiting to be put in place to share a captured moment of its “micro-life” with you.

from http://www.designmuseum.org/

When Sam Buxton needed a business card rather than make “a boring printed card”, he decided to devise one which would reflect his work as a product designer. By deploying a chemical milling process he had discovered in the electronics industry, Buxton created a flat fine stainless steel card the various parts of which unfolded into a 3-D replica of himself working at his computer. When a manufacturer spotted it in the Design Museum’s 2001 exhibition Design Now – London, the business card was put into mass-production as the first in the series of MIKRO-Man fold-up sculptures.

Sisyphus I , II, and III -- sand plotting: from http://www.taomc.com/

During the spring of 1998, as part of a collaboration with Jean-Pierre Hebert called "Ho," the idea for sand plotting emerged from our numerous experiments with motion control. The name "Sisyphus" occurred to me while watching the first sand paths being slowly and methodically created, only to be erased and redone. I designed and built two first-generation machines, giving one to Jean-Pierre as a gift.

I like the idea of its momentary presents... the sand painting "cannot" be preserved - it has to be destroit afterwords...like a sand mandala...
this is something I am trying to do from time to time.. create for the moment
appreachiate its being but than let go and destroy it or give it away...

(CHECK .. what is interactivity :O)
wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactivity
information science, communication, and industrial design, there is debate over the meaning of Interactivity. In the "contingency view" of interactivity, there are three levels: Noninteractive, when a message is not related to previous messages; Reactive, when a message is related only to one immediately previous message; and Interactive, when a message is related to a number of previous messages and to the relationship between them.[1]

Interactivity is similar to the degree of responsiveness, and is examined as a communication process in which each message is related to the previous messages exchanged, and to the relation of those messages to the messages preceding them.
gosh I have to stop researching about that .. there is so much stuff also soooo much crap about this word online.... ok ... another time ......

"Encyclopedia of sensory overload" – Wired Magazine

Multimedia : From Wagner to Virtual Reality chronicles the history of art and technology. It focuses on the avant-garde artists and engineers who have pushed the envelope of their respective disciplines to bring about the dissolution of boundaries that traditionally exist between the artistic and technological media. This approach to the history of the media arts was inspired by Richard Wagner's notion of the Gesamtkunstwerk (Total Artwork), as he applied it to music drama and his design of the Festpielhaus opera house in Bayreuth, Germany in the 19th Century.

etude I Tea/Reading Lamp

etude ISkapad av Lukas Birk torsdag, mars 01 2007 18:51:57

Your name

Lukas Birk

Your Pathway Combination
Digital Arts and Photography

The title of your etude
Tea/Reading Lamp

A short statement of intentions
I wanted to create a lamp that praises the combination of drinking tea while reading. Tea helps me a lot to focus on the written word and its deeper meaning. Different teas help for different things. Jasmine teas help me to focus and its soft texture stimulates me to sit down and drop all other distractions.

What you initially wanted the piece to be about / for - its conceptions How you initially intend to create the etude
It is all about the right atmosphere for reading. Something that has not much use except for the intended purpose. I put my tea cup onto the lamp (the light goes on)

Conceptualisation of the work

Creating not necessarily for the outcomes sake but for the process sake. Like a Buddhist sand painting. Even though I am not going to destroy my lamp. An object that is dedicated to one thing. To combine drinking tea and reading. The strange appearance of the actual lamp draws attention to what it was intended to be and hopefully inspires me to read while drinking tea. The light of the lamp is just about strong enough to read.

Write about:

I hope that it turns out to be an object of inspiration. Its strange appearance should remind me to take time for reading. Just reading. Not being multiple. But simple in the moment and dedicate this moment to one thing.
These were my intentions when I created the lamp. But I cannot tell yet if this idea will work.

Documentation of Technical and Artistic Process

Technical Analysis

Image 1: First sketch with Idea

Image 2: Cup of tea before I start to work on it :O)

Image 3: I bought a hot glue pistole and a Cookie tin box (the cookies are rotting in my kitchen - they were awful)

Image 4: I tested how many LEDs I can plug to 2 1.5V batteries - my final desition was to use a transformer that uses main power (had a 3V one which seamed to be in order) I tested it and used this one instead of battery power. - As I am using about 45 LEDs the batteries would have only lasted for 2 or 3 hours.

Image 5 & 6: I cut a hole in the tin box and glued the switch onto it - I connected the power supply to the switch. I used a slide switch .. so that I can slide my cup of tea into the lamp and the light will go on .

Image 7 & 8: I used plastic icicles (I found them) to create these weird pointy bulbs. Inside each icicle are 7 LEDs

Image 9: I cut four holes into the tin box and glued the icicles onto the box

Image 10: I connected the wires with each other - and than with the power supply from the switch

Image 11: first test if I connected everything correctly! WORKS !

Image 12: Cut little wholes on the edge of the tin box. As tin conducts electricity - I had to be careful that the metal of the LED wouldn't touch the box. So I filled the wholes with hot glue. and stuck the LEDs through the hot glue. I connected (soldered) all the wires together.

Image 13. Test if everything was done correctly... YIP

Image 14: ANd finally - black paint! voila... it great... the strangest lamp I have ever seen!!!!

Write about:

Technically it is not difficult to create this object. Wire, LEDs, hot glue, Tin Box, switches, a transformer (main to 3 V), soldering equipment and paint. I used objects that do not have any connection with each other to create an absolute new object. Step by step I soldered and glued the parts together.

How successful is the etude?

The projects intentions are very simple. Create an object that reminds you of something and combine two things. TEA and READING. As for creating an object that attracts my attention because of its strange look.. I think that is successful. I definitely created a new object. One I have never seen before. And it combines tea and reading... there is a space for my tea cup in the middle of the lamp and the light to read........
